Celebrating Earth Day!

Not only is April a month to really welcome Spring, it is the month we celebrate Earth Day!  Being aware of the Mother Nature and learning about her creatures and caring for them is extremely important to me and the Willodel Shop. Many things listed can be used as focuses for Nature Display and learning about wild life. Some of these choices might be the wooden birds, the Songbirds and Bird house set, the Hedgehogs in a Log set, the Chipmunk Set and now today I am adding The Toad Hall set.  This set is something I spent a long time on and includes a story about Toads.  It is intended to engender a caring attitude and greater awareness about toads, the greatest friend of the gardener, and gentle little spirit with a great capacity to respond to human kindness.  I am including a link here to my Garden Toad Watch Blog.  Fostering a great love, appreciation and knowledge of the natural world to our children is one of the greatest things we can do. I am also including a link to one of my favorite wild life rescue sites in the UK.  With time I will be able to add pages to this blog on family projects to build simple, functional bird houses, another important thing we can do for wildlife, and more complete instructions on creating a toad habitat.
Along with learning from the toys and sets in the shop it is also a good time to note the careful way that everything is made. Wood for the houses is hand gathered from wind fall trees. Sometimes roofs are made from recycled wood, otherwise flat pieces are cut from a log.  Glues and sealers are kept non-toxic and natural.
Thank you for dropping by !

Little Gnome Bungalow

Following up on the last post, on Saturday morning I began a small felt house with the goal of making the whole thing in 2 hours!  Such are the plans of mice and men...!  I kept working without stopping for 4.5 hrs. Combined time and material left it at $52.   My next project after some orders will be a yurt. This will not have window , door or flower boxes, so may be much faster.

I also made a BeeKeeper Gnome to go with the skep I made from raffia.

Mossy Log Gnome Home

The second felted Real Log Home! ahhh, but to say that needle felting can be an obsessive activity is an understatement!  For a person that already gets carried away with details, doing any of this in a reasonable amount of time is not likely! However , it remains my goal!  As I figure out the construction and designs of various houses, I promise they will get faster and cost less!  It is my goal to have a felt house in the $40's , so everyone can have a house :)  I have also started doing LayAway, which is working well.
As an artist, working with the beautiful wool is like doing a painting, as is clearly evidenced in the house here.  I also did a three dimensional playmat for this log house.  This is the first time I have tried it, and I like the effect, so there will be more of that.  I made the rocks look like they have lichen and moss on them.
Thank you all for your wonderful comments!  I love to hear what people are thinking , their ideas and perspectives.

Eco Friendly Sod Roof Gnome Home

For a while now I have wanted to create some eco conscious toys, which help a child learn about being Earth friendly and promote that awareness as they grow up.  Playing with toys that promote a healthy , earth happy life is a great way to "to plant seeds for positive growth".   I came up with a sod roof house and will make a play mat to go with it. This house has a roll down door cover, a thick sleep mat,  flower boxes under the windows and little mail box with an opening lid.   I also am thinking of the best way to do a thatch roof out of felt. I have also made a bee skep to go with the Sod House, and a play mat with a vegetable  garden.  I need to make a rain barrel too!
